BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW
Luke 12:16-21 | Bigger Barns
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God."
Matthew 6:19-24 | Lay Up Treasure in Heaven
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Matthew 5:16 | Let Your Light Shine
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 6:3-4 | Give in Secret
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Proverbs 21:20 | The Wise Store Up
20 The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.
Acts 20:35 | More Blessed to Give than to Receive
35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
Matthew 6:34 | Don't Worry About Tomorrow
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Luke 12:48 | To Whom Much is Given
48 Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Q&A: What If I Have Too Much Debt to Set a Finish Line? (Ep. 15)
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
One of the most significant barriers people face when considering setting a financial finish line is debt. Whether it's student loans or large credit card balances, debt can prove to be both a financial and emotional barrier to the freedom and purpose that come with setting a finish line. In this episode, we'll break down the different types of debt and how to think about each one. We'll also give some real examples, including some from our own lives, to show how a financial finish line can actually get you out of debt much faster than you would otherwise. Listen to the full episode to hear more!
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "Set a finish line as if the debt was already paid off, and then as you start to work towards that finish line, any margin above that finish line you can use to quickly pay down those debts so that they're no longer a barrier to giving."
- "We started to find a little more of a balance between the three things that excess can go to, and that's debt, giving, and retirement."
- "The process of getting rid of it is all in order to free us up to give more freely, it was about the freedom to be able to give without hesitation."
- "We set a finish line, but what if we set a temporary lower line, which you could call a 'soft finish line', so that we could pay off that debt faster?"

Q&A: Are We Even Required to Tithe in the First Place? (Ep. 14)
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
In this Q&A episode, we'll answer a listener's question about tithing with a financial finish line. What does the Bible say about tithing and where did that idea come from? Are we still required to tithe since Christ's resurrection? What does tithing mean for current day Christians? And what does tithing look like for someone with a financial finish line? We'll answer all these questions and more in our deep diving on tithing!
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "A more accurate way for us to think about tithing as Christians is that it is a small subset of how we are supposed to think about and relate to money as a whole. If tithing is the extent of how we think about how we manage God's wealth, and how we serve those around us and serve the poor, and how we think about possessions and what we spend on ourself, then we are missing the big picture of what we are called to as Christians."
- "You cannot be satisfied if you love money. There's no point at which you'll say I have enough."
- "You never see a hearse followed by a UHaul!"
BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW
Leviticus 27:30-32 | The Tithe
30 “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord. 31 If a man wishes to redeem some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. 32 And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman's staff, shall be holy to the Lord.
Numbers 18:21-26 | The General Tithe
21 “To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service that they do, their service in the tent of meeting, 22 so that the people of Israel do not come near the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin and die. 23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, and among the people of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithe of the people of Israel, which they present as a contribution to the Lord, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no inheritance among the people of Israel.”
25 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Moreover, you shall speak and say to the Levites, ‘When you take from the people of Israel the tithe that I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present a contribution from it to the Lord, a tithe of the tithe.
Deuteronomy 14:22-27 | The Worship Tithe
22 “You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. 23 And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always. 24 And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, 25 then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses 26 and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household. 27 And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you.
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 | The Welfare Tithe
28 “At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.
Matthew 23:23 | Upholding the Tithe
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 | No Satisfaction in Money
10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.
Matthew 6:24 | Can't Serve Two Masters
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Proverbs 11:24 | The One Who Gives Freely
24 One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 | A Cheerful Giver
6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
Matthew 6:19-21 | Can't Serve Two Masters
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 19:16-22 | The Rich Young Man
21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 | Don't Put Hope in Wealth
17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

In this episode, we have the chance to talk to John Cortines, coauthor of the books God and Money as well as True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart. He currently serves as Director of Generosity at The Maclellan Foundation and has also served as the Chief Operations Officer of Generous Giving, a nonprofit dedicated to opening the conversation about generosity. He shares his story starting with a six figure salary out of college on the fast track to early retirement before radically changing his perspective on wealth and faith during his time at Harvard Business School. He and his coauthor Greg Baumer have written and spoken widely about the idea of a financial finish line, and we had many questions for John about the subject.
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "Generosity is actually a mechanism for getting closer to God, and it brings joy, and it brings freedom, and it opens up a whole new avenue to purpose in life."
- "We had come into a study of God and money to ask, 'How much so we really need to give?, but God flipped our perspective to, 'How much do we need to keep?'"
- "Rather than saying 'What do I want to give money to?', say 'What does God's Word direct me to?'. And then, in the process of giving to that, to actually cry out to God and say, 'God, I don't have your heart, but I believe you can shape mine and make it more like yours.'"

Luke 12:13-21 | The Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Today, we're joined by Tim Barker, founder and director of ROI Ministry, an organization that seeks to find the absolute most effective organizations per dollar that are doing kingdom-based work in provision of basic needs, evangelism, and discipleship. He shares his thoughts on how we as Christians should think about giving in order to be most effective ourselves. How responsible are we as Christians to give in the most effective ways possible? How should we divide our giving among things like basic food and water, evangelism, and long term discipleship? Listen now to hear Tim's wisdom and insight on the subject. And when you get the chance, certainly take a look at all the resources provided on the ROI Ministry website, including their Top 10 list of effective ministries.
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "When we find a top ten ministry, not only do we have to find the impact per dollar, which can be a challenge, but also what is that impact - how can you quantify it?"
- "God places no greater value on my son than this poor impoverished boy on the street, and so what can I do to help him, as well as my son?"

Matthew 25:14-30 | The Parable of the Talents
14 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents.29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Luke 10:25-37 | The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

There is significant benefit to setting a financial finish line early in your career. Kealan and Cody offer a number of pieces of advice for college students interested in the idea of a finish line. We are often caught up in our own stories, our own careers, and our own actions. But as the guys have learned in their own experience, there is a much greater story going on. Rather than being the main character of our own story, we are minor characters in God's story. After discussing some of this foundation, the guys also dive into some practical financial advice for anyone getting started.
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "I don't want to get to the end of my life and look back on everything and realize that I had just accidentally made it all the way through life without ever actually doing anything"
- "That next phase where everything becomes easy and you have all the time in the world to do what you care about most and want to do - that never actually comes. The things that really matter, you really need to start doing now."
- "The Bible is the collective story of God and what He is doing, and we are all characters in God's story."
- "At some point, there has to be a point where you've reached enough, where that standard of living does not need to keep increasing as income keeps increasing."
- "Just like how much space you have in your home determines how much stuff you will have, however much income you have - you'll always find a way to spend it."

Q&A: How Do I Implement a Finish Line if I’m Already Retired? (Ep. 10)
Monday Feb 01, 2021
Monday Feb 01, 2021
As the finish line movement has grown, an increasing number of retired people have asked the question, "What does a financial finish line look like if I'm already retired?". Kealan and Cody tackle this questions along with a number of related questions like, "Does it make sense to keep all my savings and give it away when I die?". They also share some practical advice and strategies for giving generously and effectively during retirement.
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "For somebody in retirement, there are all these different sorts of income - retirement accounts, social security, pensions, etc - and somebody can ask themselves that same question, 'How much do I need to live on realistically, so that I can be freed up to use any excess beyond that amount for greater things beyond myself?''
- "The typical question people are asking after retirement is, 'How much have I saved? And from that, how much can I spend every year or every month?'. And what you're saying is that's the wrong question altogether. We should be asking, 'How much should I be spending?'"
- "I don't think for us, that every penny in excess of our living expenses should go towards additional security and moving us farther away from ever having to depend on God or others."

Matthew 6:26-30 | Do Not Be Anxious
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Luke 12:16-21 | The Rich Fool
16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! Q&A: How Do I Set a Finish Line with an Irregular Income (Ep. 9)
Sunday Jan 24, 2021
Sunday Jan 24, 2021
A financial finish line is a point at which you say, "Any money God blesses me with beyond this point, I will use to serve others and advance God's kingdom." But what does that look like for someone with an irregular income. Many people have varying sources of income through the year, like seasonal jobs, year-end bonuses, side gigs, temp work, and self-employment. Is a finish line still possible for someone in these situations? If so, how should they think about the process of choosing a finish line? Kealan and Cody break down all these questions and share their thoughts (and personal experience) with finish lines in the context of variable income.
QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "An irregular income might change over the course of the year which seasons you have excess to give and which seasons you don't, but I don't think it changes that core fundamental question of 'How much do I need for myself and my family to live on?'"
- "For people earning less than their selected finish line, I think it's actually more important to have that finish line in place when you do have irregular income."

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’''

QUOTES TO REMEMBER
- "We're getting close to this point where I have to give all the rest of the money away and there are still a lot of thing that I want that I don't have yet."
- "I'm not giving my money away, I'm giving God's money away."
- "Actually living tiny, generous acts of giving helped me to see what this whole thing looked like, and how being able to give away stuff makes me feel so much better than filling my house with things I think I want."
- "Ever since creating that finish line for ourselves, I don't think of it so much as giving money away as much as I think of the things I can do for other people."
